1. Lakshim is now in the house with these other girls and she now realize's what is going on and that she is not there to work for a rich family to be a maid; she is there to do something.
2. Lakshimi's first encounter with a man, she runs off because she is scared. When their house "mother," Mumtaz catches up to her tries to dicipline her by shaving off all of her hair.
3. Lakshimi does not agree to do what Mumtaz wants her to do at first, so she locks her in a room for many days by herself and only goes in there to beat her.
4. Mumtaz does not feed her or give her water becuase she has not yet agreed to do what she is told. Lakshimi has a girl that tries to help her along named Shahanna.
5. Mumtaz eventually stops beating her and tells her that she will let her live, but only if she does as she is told. She does not let her leave the room immediately, but she stays there for many more days.

1. How does Lakshimi feel now that she knows whay she has to do and why she is there? Does she feel sad, disgraced, etc.?
2. Why doesn't she agree to do whatever Mumtaz wantsher to do, so that she can stop getting beat?

1. conflict: man vs. self- In these oages Lakshimi has a lot of conflict between her and Mumtaz. They really do not get along from when she tried to run away on her first day there. {pgs 105- 108}
2. Characterization: The author uses characterization when explaing Lakshimi's thoughts and how she felt about being somewhere where she really did not kno what she had to do.{pg 115}

1 Summary Sentence-
Lakshim does not really know what she has to do and how long she has to do it for, but she does know that she has a debt to pay off and she has to be disgrasful while she does it.
